Photography is a creative pursuit. Capturing an image as it appears to the
eye is only one way and possibly the less fun approach to creating photos.
Like any other tools, the tools of photography can be used in limitless
combinations to push the boundaries of creativity, and some of the most
striking images are made when those tools are used for things their original
inventors could never have imagined. Such is the way with special effects
photography.
What do I mean by ‘special effects photography’? That’s actually pretty hard
to define, because there are so many creative uses for cameras, lighting,
processing software, and all the tools of photography. What most people
would probably understand by special effects – or SFX – is an image with
a striking visual element or elements that were created in a way that isn’t
immediately apparent just by looking at the image. This is of course a
subjective definition, but it will suffice for the purpose of this book.
In the following chapters we will take a look at a number of photographic
techniques for creating interesting and unusual images, using examples,
detailed walkthroughs and lots of explanation so that you can take what
you read here and try them yourself. By pulling back the curtain and
revealing how these striking effects are created, you will be able to add the
techniques to your own photography toolkit and express your creativity in
new ways.
My goal with this book is to help you learn new techniques to get creative
with your camera and create incredible images that will have your friends
asking, ‘How did you do that?’
